PROVIDENCE SAINT JOHN'S | UNDERSTANDING YOUR BIRTH OPTIONS

Healthcare Patient Education Film | VFX & AI-Generated Animation

The Project

Helping First-Time Mothers Make Informed Birth Decisions

Providence Saint John's Women's Health and Wellness Institute commissioned Big Bite Films to create a patient education film helping expectant mothers better understand their delivery options, including vaginal birth and cesarean delivery.

Designed primarily for first-time mothers considering a planned cesarean section, the film explains the potential benefits of vaginal birth for both mother and baby, the implications for future pregnancies, and the circumstances in which a cesarean delivery may be the safest medical option.

The goal was to present important maternity information in a reassuring, accessible format that would help patients feel better prepared to discuss their birth preferences and medical considerations with their physicians.

The Creative Challenge

Turning Medical Guidance Into Relatable Stories

Providence provided a medically detailed script covering the benefits and risks of different delivery methods, postpartum recovery, future pregnancies, and ways expectant mothers can prepare for childbirth.

Our challenge was to refine the script into a clear, engaging narrative without compromising its medical accuracy or the information Providence wanted patients to understand. We reorganized sections, refined the language, and developed a more natural progression that would make the information easier to follow.

Just as important was finding a way to connect the medical guidance to real-life experiences. Rather than presenting a series of facts and recommendations, we wanted viewers to recognize themselves in the situations on screen and understand how different birth experiences could affect their lives.

We also needed to address the realities of cesarean delivery sensitively, explaining its potential risks while reassuring viewers that surgery is sometimes necessary and can be the safest option for mother and baby.

Our Creative Approach

Creating a Human Connection Through AI-Generated Storytelling

We began by refining Providence's original script, reorganizing the medical information into a more cohesive story that moved naturally between the benefits of vaginal birth, considerations surrounding cesarean delivery, and ways expectant mothers can prepare for childbirth.

To make the film relatable, we developed three expectant mothers whose experiences illustrate different aspects of the educational content. Rather than relying entirely on narration and graphics, we created scenes that connect the medical information to recognizable moments in pregnancy, childbirth, and early motherhood.

One of our central storytelling decisions was to follow the same mother through two pregnancies. We first see her after delivering her baby, then returning to everyday activities during her recovery. As the camera moves through her home, time advances and we discover that she's pregnant again, with her now-toddler playing beside her. The story continues through the birth of her second child, visually reinforcing how delivery decisions can affect recovery and future pregnancies.

A second character illustrates circumstances in which cesarean delivery may be appropriate. We show her consulting with her physician, undergoing a cesarean section, and recovering afterward. The operating room sequence was designed to communicate the seriousness of surgery without showing graphic medical imagery, keeping the experience approachable for expectant mothers.

A third character helps introduce the importance of preparation and informed decision-making. Through scenes of prenatal exercise, medical consultations, and reviewing educational materials, her story reinforces the value of understanding available options and working closely with a healthcare team.

Big Bite Films developed the characters, scenes, and detailed storyboards, establishing the creative vision for the entire film. We directed the generation of AI imagery and animation through specific visual instructions and extensive refinements, shaping each sequence until it matched our intended look and narrative. The individual animated scenes were then assembled through professional editing, with a custom voiceover providing continuity and a VFX artist polishing the transitions and on-screen graphics.

The result is a cohesive visual narrative that combines AI-generated animation with traditional editing and visual effects, demonstrating how carefully directed technology can support emotionally engaging healthcare storytelling.

The Patient Experience

Supporting Confident, Informed Birth Decisions

The finished film was designed to help expectant mothers understand the potential benefits of vaginal delivery, the risks and recovery considerations associated with cesarean birth, and the importance of individualized medical guidance.

By combining clear medical explanations with relatable characters and approachable visual storytelling, the film presents important information without relying on graphic medical imagery or overwhelming viewers with technical language.

For Big Bite Films, the project demonstrates how AI-generated animation, thoughtful creative direction, and character-driven storytelling can transform complex maternity education into understandable content that supports meaningful conversations between patients and their healthcare providers.
